A soft starter only reduces inrush at startup; a VFD gives continuous speed control. That difference matters when you need precise conveyor timing or energy savings at low load.

For procurement, a VFD is not a box you buy by horsepower alone. You need input voltage, phase, motor full-load amps, enclosure rating, control method, and communication protocol. If you get those wrong, the VFD becomes a doorstop. I would rather work with a specialist who knows their limits than a generalist who overpromises. A good supplier will say, 'This VFD is right, but for that micro stepper motor application, you should talk to a motion specialist.' That earns trust.
